Congrats NUS Computing Assistant Professor Jonathan Scarlett for making MIT Technology Review’s ‘Innovators Under 35’ Asia Pacific List! 🎉

Dr Scarlett was recognised for his work on group testing – a technique for fast testing in medical applications, such as in blood tests 🩸 and the nasal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests 🧪 widely used during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

NUS Computing will be partnering 2U Inc, an education technology company, to expand online professional education by offering 12 new short courses in areas such as artificial intelligence, business analytics and fintech/blockchain. These courses will be made available online sometime next year.

Nearly 10 years ago, NUS Computing alumnus Goh Eng Wei (Computer Engineering, Class of 2013) and NUS Engineering alumna Grace Chia were part of an 8-person undergrad team that built an underwater autonomous robot. Today, this student project has evolved into BeeX, an autonomous maritime systems startup! Congrats BeeX on securing seed funding for their tech start-up! 🎉

To equip lawyers with the skills to harness disruptive technologies that are impacting the future of law, NUS Computing and law firm Rajah & Tann worked together to develop a 7-course technology program, which included topics in design thinking, financial technology, application programming interface, robotic process automation, business analytics, and blockchain.

A total of 22 Rajah & Tann participants from the firm’s technology interest group completed the training and attended the virtual graduation ceremony yesterday. Congratulations to these participants!

From clocks and soft toys, to lighters and even spray bottles, spy cameras can be hidden anywhere and everywhere. 😱 📸 Computer Science PhD student Sriram Sami shows us how to detect hidden cameras with the help of his Laser Assisted Photography Detection (LAPD) app!

The LAPD app was developed by Sriram and two other NUS Computing PhD students, Sean Tan and Sun Bangjie, as well as Asst Prof Han Jun from Yonsei University, in 2020. Watch the video to find out how it works!
