NUS Computing had the pleasure of hosting & organising the International Olympiad in Informatics not once, but twice, in 2020 and 2021. 🇸🇬 While the pandemic meant that we had to organise both Olympiads virtually, we are glad we managed to pull this off, with over 350 participants from 88 teams participating in the Olympiad! 🌏
We're excited to announce that we will be passing the baton on to Indonesia, who will be hosting IOI 2022! 🇮🇩

We're excited to share that we've launched the Centre for Computing for Social Good & Philanthropy (CCSGP)!
The Centre provides students with opportunities to give back to society and to cultivate a philanthropic ethos among future generations of tech leaders.
The new Centre will bring together three existing community programmes under NUS Computing and introduce two new initiatives this year. Over time, more programmes will be introduced with the ultimate goal of having 1 in 8 NUS Computing students participate in programmes or projects under the new Centre.
The new Centre was officially launched today by Mr Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies.

We're inspired by NUS Computing graduate Chan Wei Zhang's (Information Security, 2021) journey: an ITE and Republic Polytechnic graduate, Wei Zhang applied to NUS Computing twice after setting his mind on studying here. He did so in a bid to prove wrong the people who had negative stereotypes of the less academically inclined. We're proud to see that he accomplished what he set out to do! 🎉 🎓
We leave you with some wise words from Wei Zhang: "Don't compare yourself with others because there will always be others who are better than you. If you try, but fall short, it is not the end of the world. There are always opportunities for you to grow."

There's no waffling around for NUS Computing graduate Zames Chua (Computer Science, 2020) and NUS FASS graduate Auston Quek! 🧇 These two foodies, who met at the orientation of the NUS Overseas Colleges programme, set out to solve a problem that most F&B outlets in Singapore face: inefficient food purchases being conducted with clunky machines, resulting in impatient customers. 😰
To solve this, their start-up, Waffle Technologies, produces point-of-sale and customer loyalty software for F&B outlets. They developed an easy-to-use app on a double tablet system, allowing the customer to also see the transaction when purchasing food and drinks.
Five months after launching their start-up in the midst of the pandemic, Waffle Tech's programmes are used in 42 locations in Singapore, including well-known brands like Barcook Bakery, Tea Tree Café and Lee Wee & Brothers.

It's a bird, it's a plane... it's an alien spaceship! 👽 🛸 At NUS Computing, freshmen are tasked to complete intergalactic quests such as repairing robots and helping their alien friends - all while using their newly learnt programming skills.
All this is part of the Source Academy, an immersive online game developed by Associate Professor Martin Henz that helps students learn programming skills. The students don't just get to play the game for their module - after they complete the module, students are also invited to develop the game further.
Most recently, the core team members behind Source Academy also won the faculty-wide Annual Digital Education Award (Team) for the academic year 2020/2021. 🏆
