The $125 Trillion World Economy — Told in One Chart ! Over the past fifty years, the world economy has expanded from just $3 trillion to an astonishing $125 trillion — a fortyfold increase marking the greatest economic transformation in human history. Asia’s rapid industrialization and urbanization have driven this shift, now contributing about one-third of global output, led by China, India, and other emerging economies. Five nations — the U.S., China, India, Japan, and Germany — generate more than half of global GDP, with the U.S. remaining dominant through its strong consumer economy and China sustaining its role as the global manufacturing hub despite structural challenges. India’s rise as a $4.5 trillion economy signals shifting dynamics, while mid-income reformers like Indonesia and Türkiye are gaining momentum. As the IMF warns of slowing growth, rising protectionism, and geopolitical uncertainty, the global economy is still expected to reach $185 trillion by 2055. (Credit: Ravi Sharma)
