It is believed that research of any kind is a complete waste of both time and limited financial resources. I totally disagree with this view for three main reasons.
Scientific research plays a crucial role in technological development. Many current devices and appliances have come to being mainly because of extensive research programs done, and these technologies now satisfy individuals’ needs and have streamlined our everyday lives. Although the findings may not always yield tangible results or lead to groundbreaking discoveries, the efforts at least may be valuable for future use. Take electric vehicles, for instance. They were invented shortly after scholars completed space missions - an endeavor that was thought to be futile initially. However, these vehicles are now of paramount importance in reducing carbon footprint and facilitating sustainable commutes.
Another field that stands to gain is healthcare. By gaining a deeper understanding of how diseases can be cured and how people can protect themselves from illnesses, researchers can be able to contribute to the public’s overall well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic is a compelling case. During this period of lockdown, it was thanks to international studies in vaccine development that saved millions of lives. If governments treated medical research as an unnecessary expense, the virus would have been affecting many others to this day.
Even more appealing are the benefits for education. Various factors influence children’s academic excellence, and scholars’ understanding of what hinders (blocks) their performance is still in its infancy. In some countries like India, most children, despite being multilingual from a very young age, demonstrate significantly lower levels of academic performance compared to their peers in other parts of the world. By exploring the affects of inborn tendencies, genetic disorders, classroom sizes, teaching methods, or financial backgrounds of students, it may be possible to maximise and lift youth’s chances of learning more effectively, paving the way for their future careers.
To conclude, even though scientific studies may not be revolutionary all the time, their significance in contributing to various aspects of our lives is invaluable, ranging from education to technological progress. Thus, I believe that such research should not be seen burdensome.
