A recent APK teardown suggests Nothing's Essential Space app may introduce a paid subscription, with code referencing "free trial" and "AI credits." The company has yet to officially confirm any subscription plans. Source @EqualLeaks | @LaptopInsider |โฆ

Nothing 3a Pro has this too
Two new units bought on the same day
Both had tint issues and even worse retention issues (like you see on old LCDs)

Imagine saying this for a phone that was just taken out of the box
My friend noticed it when he went to that IMEI barcode info page
Left the phone on his table and came back
And the barcode is now temporarily burned into the screen
Tint was already noticed on first use when screen brightness was low

Unlike my previous project, kaeru, this is a legit exploit that probably affects a bunch of newer MediaTek SoCs (even though I've only tested this with Pacman for now).
I'm still working on a PoC that should let you do pretty much whatever you want (similar to what kaeru can do right now) at the bootloader level.
That includes things like disabling boot warnings, adding your own custom fastboot commands, or even faking the TEE lock state on devices where kaeru can't be used.
More details coming soon, hopefully.

Carl Pei Says Nothing Acquired Essential Just For Its Name
In February 2021, Nothing acquired Essential which had shut down in 2020 due to lack of sales. While Nothing didn't reveal any details about the acquisition at that time, Nothingโs CEO, Carl Pei, took part in a video interview where he explained why he bought Essential in 2021.
Carl Pei revealed that his motive behind Essential's acquisition was to secure primarily the Essential name, including access to Essential's domain name, social media handles etc. In short, Essential acquisition was only done for its name, neither for its technology, nor for its talent.
If you're wondering why it was acquired just for the sake of its name, that's because, initially the plan was to use the Essential name for the company's own product lineup instead of Nothing. Nothing Phone 1 would have been called as โEssential R1โ as shown in the image.
Before the name Nothing got finalized, Carl Pei was considering "Stone" as an alternative to the Essential name. However, at the end, Carl Pei still chose to go with Nothing as the name of the company. In the purchase of Essential, Pei says that Nothing did NOT gain any of the companyโs patents, but rather just the trademarks. Carl Pei refused to reveal how much he paid for Essential when asked in the video as it will breach the NDA they signed.

Carl Pei is basically Donald Trump of the smartphone industry
๐25๐ฉ4๐3๐ฏ2
If Carl Pei used Sennheiser's HD 650 headphones for 10 years (released in 2003, 22 years ago), it says a lot about Sennheiserโs sound and build quality โ something Nothingโs products might want to copy... if they donโt fall apart first.
