SPM Speaking Test Format
Part 1
Phase 1: The interlocutor will ask your name and a question about yourself.
Example Questions :
What's your name?
Where do you live?
How do you go to school?
Phase 2: Usually, 1-2 questions regarding your daily routine or private information
Example Questions :
Do you have a big family?
What do you normally do after you wake up?
What do you do after school?
What's your favorite teacher?
What's your favorite subject?
How much is your pocket money?
How often do you watch movies?
Notes: It's advised to answer each question in 10-20 seconds
Part 2
The interlocutor will hand out a paper with questions that Candidate A will need to answer. 20 seconds are given to think and 1 minute to answer.
After Candidate A has finished answering, the interlocutor will ask a similar question to Candidate B. There's no time to think, and there's only 20 seconds to answer.
After that, the interlocutor will do it in reverse order instead (Candidate B gets the paper, Candidate A will be asked a similar question).
Notes: Make sure to answer all the questions on the paper (which is usually 4 bulleted points).
Part 3
Phase 1: Discussion
The interlocutor will hand out a paper with a theme and six points regarding the theme. Around 20 seconds are given to think, and 2 minutes are given for both candidates to discuss the points.
Notes : Candidates don't have to cover all the points given. 4 points (2 points per candidate) is usually the ideal way.
Phase 2: Decide
Both candidates would need to decide which point that has been discussed earlier is the best point. There's no time to think, and there's one minute to answer.
Notes: Avoid disagreeing with your partner to avoid running out of time.
Phase 3: Hots Question
After deciding, the interlocutor will ask a KBAT question to both candidates that's related to the theme of your discussion. There's no time to think and 2 minutes to answer.
Notes: Both candidates need to answer the same question in 2 minutes.
