cave paintings of the digital era

gao hang was 10 when he first played counter-strike. the world inside looked real to him, and it stayed
now he paints it: low-poly bodies, mushy textures, edges too sharp for a canvas
references come from emulators and other people's gameplay recordings. a compressed game texture ends up as a 2-meter painting
the way there is 4 steps: screenshot, photoshop, canvas, then airbrush and tape
the images are simple enough that anyone recognizes them instantly. laughter comes first, then awkwardness, then something closer to nostalgia

our patron said about this:
many perceive such graphics as clumsy and outdated
while the modern world chases hyper-realism in metaverses, the artist finds beauty in simplicity
these smeared textures may not be perfect, but they hide true sincerity and nostalgia

The Spray Paint Test
Β· Β· Β·
in hardware and paint stores people spray a bit from the can before buying it, just to see the color and how it comes out
some of those spots got covered in names, tags and layers of paint over the years. the floor around the shelf turned into graffiti nobody planned
now more stores keep the cans locked in cases, so these spots are getting rare

Engraved Objects
by Trystan Williams
π«₯
Lurking online is like mining for precious stones. You can hack at rock for a month for naught, but one day you would hit a diamond and all that time spent became vindicated instantly.
Because beyond that drab talk there are people as brilliant as any gem. People that would reply with what you expected and more.
People that were as brutal in their put downs as they were admirable in their genius.
