First things first - everyone has needs!

Having needs does not make you needy. It makes you a person 😃

In fact, we tend to get needy when our needs are not met.

Kind of like when you're really hungry, all you can think about is food, when our emotional and spiritual needs are not being met, we tend to become preoccupied with them.

*** When I say spiritual, I don't mean religious. Your spiritual needs are the things that make YOU feel alive and like life is meaningful and worth living.
There is a huge variety of human needs, so I won't list them all here. A quick Google search will bring up more than enough examples 😃

But all that variety can be whittled down to 6 basic human needs.

Certainty

🤹‍♀️ Uncertainty/Variety

💞 Love & Connection

🌱 Growth

🌟 Significance

🎁 Contribution
Certainty – The need for security, comfort, and stability. We seek predictability to feel safe and avoid pain.

🤹‍♀️ Uncertainty/Variety – The need for change, novelty, and excitement. Too much certainty can lead to boredom, so we seek out new experiences.

🌟 Significance – The need to feel important, unique, or special. We often fulfill this through achievement, recognition, and sometimes even creating problems to stand out.

Significance is also the need to feel that life has meaning - that the Universe is not just empty and pointless. We may meet this aspect of this need through religion, spirituality, art or a sense of purpose.

💞 Love & Connection – The need for deep relationships, belonging, and emotional bonds. Most people seek this through intimacy, friendships, or community.

🌱 Growth – The need to develop, expand, and improve oneself. If we aren’t growing, we often feel stagnant or unfulfilled.

🎁 Contribution – The need to give beyond oneself, to positively impact the lives of others and to make a difference in the world. We often meet this need through helping, teaching, giving to others or through volunteering, activism or charity work.
Everyone has these 6 basic needs. We may prioritize them differently based on our personality, upbringing or life circumstances. But these needs are the main drivers of human behavior.
So, now that you know the 6 basic needs, I have a fun little self-awareness exercise for you 😁

1. Reflect on each of these needs and how they show up in your life. Which ones drive you the most? Which ones feel less essential? Then, rank them from most to least important.

This will help you get an idea of what is more and less important to you as a person - and where most of your energy and attention tends to go.
Once you've done that, consider these questions:

What did you discover about yourself through this exercise?

How easy or challenging was it for you to rank your needs and why?

Did anything stand out to you?

Did anything surprise you?

Were you not surprised at all?

If you really want to go deeper, you can try moving through your day by noticing which needs are motivating your thoughts and actions. This will help you train your self-attunement muscle. 💪

Just remember that coaching is not consulting or talk therapy. It is not about processing the past, providing all the answers or solving problems on your behalf. It’s about creating space for deep exploration and discovery and finding the courage to transform.

My goal is to help you build self-trust and become the version of you who is capable of learning, growing, expanding, succeeding and moving through challenges with deep inner confidence.

Hi there.

While I was working on a post today, I started thinking about the human 'shadow' and how it's often misrepresented in pop psychology.

We tend to think of our 'shadow' as the negative parts of our personality - things we don't like about ourselves and want to hide from the world.

And while that's not not-true, it doesn't paint the full picture. 

Our shadow contains the parts of us that are also hidden from ourselves. The parts we are not aware of (but that other people can see - yikes 😬). It also hold the parts of us that we had rejected and  essentially kicked out of our conscious awareness at an early age because they were not welcome in our environment. It didn't feel safe enough to fully express them, so we cast them aside.

In that way, our shadow is our big, uncomfortable blind spot.

Now, these can be our negative traits but also our extremely positive traits (often knowns as our golden shadow). And that's where things get interesting.

In my contemplations, I decided to record this super casual video where I go a bit deeper into this topic and share an exercise I love to do with my coaching clients to help them tap into their golden shadow.
