Kodokushi, meaning 'Lone Lonely Death, is a Japanese term for when a person dies, typically alone in their apartment or at home, and are not discovered for quite some time.
Typically happening to older people, with no one to love or take care of them. As Japan's fast aging population races to reach 40% over 65 by 2050, very few are left to take care of the elderly, as a consequence when someone passes away, it can take a long time for them to be found.
In 2019, 3,913 people 65 or older died alone in Tokyo's 23 wards in 2019, up 80 percent from 10 years earlier, according to the metropolitan government. And in 2024, a total of over 20,000 died alone of "kodokushi," in the FIRST THREE MONTHS. 80% were over 65.
Typically about 40% are found half a week after death, and the further it takes for a body to be found, the harder it is to find the cause of death.
As a consequence of this, the death cleanup industry has seen a boom of work, and agencies have even added "cleansing rituals" to their cleanups to ward away bad spirits that could linger. Insurance agencies have also started selling insurance policies that would help cover clean up costs when someone dies in their apartment. Around 50,000 yen a month for up to 1 million in damages.
