🇺🇸🇨🇳 US Navy Weighs Allied Shipbuilding

The US is considering deeper cooperation with Japan and South Korea on warship design and construction as it tries to narrow its fleet gap with China. According to the South China Morning Post, the next US budget includes US$1.85 billion for a study on outsourcing parts of frigate and destroyer production, including the possible adoption or co-production of Japan’s Mogami-class and South Korea’s Daegu-class hulls.

The push comes as China fields at least 350 naval vessels, compared with 291 US battle force ships, below the 355-ship level required by US law. US shipbuilding has been constrained by delays, cost overruns, labour shortages and limited domestic yard capacity, factors that also contributed to the cancellation of the Constellation-class frigate programme in November.

The proposal faces domestic political resistance, but it reflects pressure on Washington to expand naval output faster than its current industrial base allows.

🇧🇼🇳🇬 Akinwumi Adesina to chair Botswana and De Beers diamond fund

Botswana’s government and De Beers have appointed former African Development Bank president Akinwumi Adesina as chairperson of the Diamonds for Development Fund, created to use diamond proceeds to support economic growth and diversification in Botswana. De Beers has committed an upfront investment of BWP 1 billion, equivalent to $74.4 million, as well as annual contributions from its dividends from Debswana based on performance, and Adesina will formally assume the role on 15 June 2026.

The fund was established during negotiations concluded in 2025 that extended diamond mining licences for the 50:50 Debswana joint venture through 2054. The talks also produced a new 10-year sales and marketing agreement under which Botswana’s Okavango Diamond Company share of Debswana rough diamond sales will rise from 30% to 50% by 2035-40.
