World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, on Saturday as the town remains at the epicentre of the current Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The outbreak, declared on 15 May, has spread across three eastern provinces, with at least 1,077 suspected cases and 246 deaths reported in the DRC. In neighbouring Uganda, authorities have confirmed nine infections, including one death.

Tedros has been in the DRC since Thursday to coordinate the response and called on communities to play a central role in fighting the disease. He also said the WHO had received only a third of its required funding and warned the outbreak's true reach was likely wider than currently detected.

🇭🇺 Hungary’s progress on reforms under the new government will allow the European Commission to unlock €16.4 billion in previously frozen EU recovery and cohesion funds, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, Reuters reports.

Following a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, von der Leyen announced that the EU would release €10 billion from the Next Generation EU recovery fund and €4.2 billion from cohesion funds. An additional €2.2 billion will be made available once the reform process is completed.

“This is quite a significant amount, but the Hungarian people deserve it. Thank you again for the outstanding work that has been done,” von der Leyen said.

The funds are considered crucial for reviving Hungary’s economy, which has effectively stagnated for the past three years.

The new government inherited a growing budget deficit, which the European Commission estimates could reach 6.2% of GDP in 2026 following heavy pre-election spending under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

“We will bring this money home, as promised, to rebuild Hungary, restart the economy, restore and improve public services, and strengthen the competitiveness of Hungarian companies and small and medium-sized enterprises,” Magyar told reporters.

He added that the agreement demonstrated the effectiveness of his government’s anti-corruption measures.

Combating corruption, which the EU said was widespread under Orbán’s administration, was one of the key conditions for unfreezing the funds.

🇨🇦🇹🇼 Canadian warship transits Taiwan Strait

The Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class frigate HMCS Charlottetown transited the Taiwan Strait on May 22–23 in Canada’s first such passage this year, according to Taiwan’s foreign ministry, which welcomed the move as support for freedom, peace and openness in the Indo-Pacific. Taipei said the transit demonstrated Canada’s position that the strait is international waters.

Taiwan said this was Canada’s eighth naval transit of the strait since Ottawa released its Indo-Pacific strategy in November 2022. Canada’s defence ministry had separately said the Charlottetown conducted a routine solo passage last Friday and completed it the next day.

The transit took place about a week before Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s May 28–30 visit to Canada. Taiwan said it will continue strengthening self-defence and deepen cooperation with democratic partners.
