China expelled New York Times Beijing correspondent Vivian Wang in February, with officials linking the move to the paper’s interview with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te at the DealBook Summit in late 2025. Wang had been based in Beijing since 2022 and did not take part in the interview; the US later revoked the visa of a China state-media journalist in a reciprocal step.

According to the reports, Chinese officials said the trigger was Lai’s video interview with the New York Times, in which he said Taiwan must prepare for a worst-case scenario if the PLA uses force. The case points to a harder Beijing line on international media engagement with Taiwan, after years in which such interviews had been tolerated to some degree; the Times also said officials had long objected to Wang’s reporting on censorship, Covid-19, and state surveillance.

The episode adds a media access dispute to broader US-China friction and tighter cross-Strait political sensitivities. It also further narrows operating space for foreign journalists in China.

🇨🇩 WHO chief visits Bunia as Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo reaches 1,077 suspected cases

World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, on Saturday as the town remains at the epicentre of the current Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The outbreak, declared on 15 May, has spread across three eastern provinces, with at least 1,077 suspected cases and 246 deaths reported in the DRC. In neighbouring Uganda, authorities have confirmed nine infections, including one death.

Tedros has been in the DRC since Thursday to coordinate the response and called on communities to play a central role in fighting the disease. He also said the WHO had received only a third of its required funding and warned the outbreak's true reach was likely wider than currently detected.
