Malaysia’s defence minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that major powers had stayed silent after Norway revoked export approvals tied to Kuala Lumpur’s naval missile purchase. He said the cancelled deal sent a dangerous signal on contract integrity, as Malaysia continues to seek over US$251 million in compensation from the Norwegian company involved, according to CNA’s report.

The dispute escalated this month after Oslo withdrew approvals for certain technologies linked to the naval missile system. Norway said the move did not intentionally target Malaysia and was based solely on its export control rules, but Kuala Lumpur has framed it as a unilateral breach and cited double standards in how international rules are applied to developing states versus major powers and their allies.

Malaysia said it is now in talks with “real partners” to procure the missile system elsewhere. The case adds friction to a bilateral defence dispute while raising wider questions over reliability in cross-border arms contracts.

🇨🇩🇺🇬 MSF warns over rapid Ebola spread in DR Congo as cases top 1,000

Médecins Sans Frontières said on Saturday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo had become deeply alarming just two weeks after it was declared. DR Congo has recorded more than 1,000 suspected cases and at least 246 deaths, while neighbouring Uganda has reported nine confirmed cases and one death. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Ituri province, the epicentre of the outbreak, to oversee containment efforts.

MSF deputy director Dr Alan Gonzales said no previous Ebola outbreak had recorded so many cases so soon after declaration and warned that hundreds of samples remained untested. The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, which has no proven vaccine and has an estimated fatality rate of about one third.
