🇧🇼🇳🇬 Akinwumi Adesina to chair Botswana and De Beers diamond fund

Botswana’s government and De Beers have appointed former African Development Bank president Akinwumi Adesina as chairperson of the Diamonds for Development Fund, set up to ensure Botswana benefits more from its diamond wealth. The fund was established during negotiations that concluded in 2025 to extend mining licences for Debswana, the 50:50 Botswana-De Beers joint venture, through to 2054. De Beers has committed an upfront BWP 1 billion, equivalent to $74.4m, as well as annual contributions from its Debswana dividends based on performance. Adesina will formally assume the role on 15 June 2026.

Adesina served as AfDB president from 2015 until the end of his second term in September 2025, while the fund is still finalising the appointment of independent directors to its board.

Ukraine's USF operators struck training grounds and military camps of Russia's 3rd and 36th Armies 70-100 km behind the front line overnight on May 30. 21 hits confirmed.

The 64th Motor Rifle Brigade, which committed atrocities in Bucha in 2022, was among the targets. Confirmed losses: 31 soldiers, 9 killed, 9 wounded, 13 missing.

Losses at the 3rd Army's Tryokhizbenka training ground are still being assessed. A gas storage facility in occupied Yenakiieve and Russian logistics across occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions were also hit.
