Violence has spread across mining areas in western and southern Mali, with several Chinese-run operations hit since 2025, according to The Africa Report. The report says the jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, or JNIM, is raising funds by extracting resources and forcing deals linked to Mali’s gold economy, particularly around illegal Chinese mining activity.

Mali is one of Africa’s leading gold producers, and insecurity around mining zones has become a growing concern as armed groups seek access to local revenue streams.
