Following the collapse of the SDF in January 2026, Israel’s plan to fragment Syria through its minorities failed in favor of a Turkish Sunni and pan-Islamist project for Syria. However, Israel has not yet ceased to promote the fragmentation of Syria and, in addition to supporting the Druze, has begun to focus more on the Alawites. Although the number barely reaches a thousand people (who have moved for economic reasons or to regularize their status with the government), the civilian population’s reactions toward them are not very favorable, as they are viewed as traitors to the common Alawite cause and seen as a threat to the fragile balance of power in the area.

Divided by differing interests and lacking a common roadmap, the fate of the Alawite community in Syria is uncertain. Politically, they lack leaders capable of mobilizing the population and securing demands for international protection. Militarily, the Alawite insurgency is splitting following disagreements among its leadership late last year. Some have fled to Israel, others threaten to attack Alawite traitors affiliated with Jolani, others remain in hiding, and still others have joined the Lebanese resistance to fight against Israel.
