The Czech ammunition initiative remains in operation, but only nine of the original 18 countries are currently contributing to it, Czech President Petr Pavel told the Financial Times.

He said that since new Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš took office, the number of participating countries in the initiative to purchase ammunition for Ukraine has been cut in half.

Under the Czech-led initiative, Ukraine has received more than four million large-caliber artillery shells since 2024. According to Pavel, the program covers up to 50% of Ukraine’s needs for large-caliber ammunition, and there is currently no alternative to it.

The Czech president said the future of the initiative should be among the issues discussed at the NATO summit in Ankara in July.

Pavel’s office declined to disclose which countries had recently withdrawn. According to sources cited by the Financial Times, Germany and some Scandinavian countries remain participants.

However, one source noted that “some countries now find it strange to pay for something that no longer has clear support from the political leadership of the leading country.”

Babiš repeatedly criticized the initiative during the election campaign, and after taking office his administration reportedly left it in limbo for several months.

As a result, some countries are now choosing to buy shells directly from manufacturers and transfer them to Ukraine, instead of relying on the Czech Republic to coordinate purchases.
