Senegal's National Assembly Speaker El Malick Ndiaye resigned on Sunday, days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the government. MPs have been called to meet on Tuesday to consider Sonko's return to parliament and elect a new speaker, with speculation that the vacant post could be offered to him.

The move comes after months of tension between Faye and Sonko, the leader of the ruling Pastef party, which holds an absolute majority in parliament. Lawmakers have up to three months to approve a new prime minister, while the president cannot dissolve parliament before November, two years after the last legislative election.
