Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy confirmed during an exclusive interview with Moneyweb on Monday that the Department of Transport (DoT) believes it needs to introduce a vehicle owner contributory scheme – apart from introducing the no-fault system and a standard schedule of benefits.

Creecy said the DoT has two concerns regarding RAF funding.

She said the first is the increased uptake of electric vehicles by consumers, as the current RAF funding model is a levy on petrol prices.

Her comments refer to the expected decline in income from the RAF levy in the fuel price and the fact that the levy will not be a sustainable source of income for the fund into the future.

Creecy said the second issue is that the DoT knows that the RAF’s contingent liability and the risk to the fiscus is very high.

🇺🇦 111/122 drones and ?/2 Iskander-M missiles shot down!

On the night of May 26, Russia attacked Ukraine with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 122 strike UAVs. Ukrainian air defenses shot down or suppressed 111 enemy drones, the Ukrainian Air Force reported, marking an interception rate of 90.98%.

Hits by nine strike UAVs and missiles were recorded at 11 locations, while debris from downed drones fell at three other locations.

The attack is ongoing, with new groups of enemy UAVs entering Ukrainian airspace.

🇨🇩 Drone strikes hit Kisangani airport in new wave of attacks in DR Congo

Multiple explosions struck Bangboka airport in Kisangani, Tshopo province, at around 5:30 pm on Sunday, with local authorities reporting nine blasts between Sunday night and early Monday morning. Two flights were canceled, no casualties were reported, and officials said the full extent of damage was still being assessed. Authorities suspect drone strikes and said investigations are underway. It was reportedly the fourth time the airport has been targeted.

The attacks came as fighting continued in eastern DR Congo, where AFC/M23 accused government forces of carrying out drone strikes on positions in North Kivu and Minembwe. On Friday, the international contact group for the Great Lakes region, including Belgium, France, the United States and the European Union, condemned the growing use of drones and the rising number of civilian victims in eastern Congo.
