🇪🇹 Ethiopia heads into June 1 general election with Abiy Ahmed set for expected landslide

Ethiopia will hold a general election on June 1, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his Prosperity Party widely expected to retain power after winning 485 of 502 contested seats in 2021. The vote is taking place amid armed conflicts in Oromia and Amhara, where polling has already been cancelled in 30 of Amhara's 137 constituencies, while the national election authority said voting will not take place in Tigray.

There are 23 registered parties, but most are considered close to the ruling party, while several major opposition figures are in exile or involved in armed movements. A budget of 10 billion birr, equivalent to $64 million, has been allocated for voting at about 49,000 polling stations across a country of more than 1.1 million square kilometres.
