The move comes amid broader EU concern over Chinese exports, industrial subsidies and market distortions, as Brussels weighs trade defence tools and economic security measures. It also reflects widening support inside the bloc for reducing strategic dependencies on China while preserving room for commercial engagement.

The debate adds pressure ahead of further EU-China contacts, including expected discussions involving China’s commerce leadership in Brussels. Any shift in the bloc’s position could affect trade policy and bilateral negotiations in the near term.
