The article says armed groups are increasingly turning on local leaders with pay or die threats, highlighting the spread of kidnappings and extortion beyond civilians and business figures.

The attacks underscore continued insecurity in Nigeria despite repeated troop deployments. Traditional rulers and local officials have increasingly become targets as criminal gangs and insurgent-linked fighters expand operations in several parts of the country.
