🇭🇰🇨🇳 Hong Kong astronaut joins Shenzhou-23

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee held a video call with Lai Ka-ying ahead of the Shenzhou-23 launch on Sunday, praising the city’s first astronaut before she joins the national crewed mission. Lai, a 43-year-old police superintendent with a doctorate in computer science, is serving as a payload specialist on the team set to dock with China’s Tiangong space station.

Lee said Lai’s participation reflected Beijing’s recognition, trust and support for Hong Kong. Lai said her nearly two years of training in Beijing had been rigorous and demanding, and that she was confident of completing the mission.

The call was also attended by Hong Kong officials overseeing innovation and the civil service, linking the flight to the city’s role in national science and technology programmes.

🇳🇬🇲🇦 Nigeria and Morocco seek US funding for 6,900km Atlantic Gas Pipeline

Officials from Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines visited Washington in early May to seek financing for the Nigeria-Morocco Atlantic Gas Pipeline, a 6,900km project being developed with Nigeria’s NNPC. The pipeline would cross 13 West African coastal countries, carry 30 billion cubic metres of gas, and is estimated to cost $25bn, with half of its capacity earmarked for domestic markets and the rest for exports to Spain and wider Europe.

The first phase, linking offshore gas fields in Senegal and Mauritania to the Maghreb-Europe pipeline through Morocco, is planned to become operational by 2031, while the full route is tentatively scheduled for 2046. Nigeria previously backed a Trans-Saharan pipeline with Algeria and Niger in 2022, but that project has faced security and diplomatic obstacles.

Bila Tserkva was damaged after Russia struck Kyiv Oblast overnight with Oreshnik. Prosecutors said a garage cooperative and enterprise buildings were damaged in the Bila Tserkva district. Across Kyiv Oblast, 2 people were killed and 8 wounded, including an infant, while emergency services worked at 25 locations after the attack.
