US President Donald Trump announced on May 16 that Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as the global second-in-command of Islamic State, was killed in northeast Nigeria in a joint operation involving US forces and the Nigerian military. Trump said the mission was carried out by Brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria, while President Bola Tinubu called it a significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism.
The operation comes after months of strained relations following Trump’s November accusations that Nigeria was allowing the mass killing of Christians. In early May, Nigeria’s national security adviser Nuhu Ribadu visited Washington for meetings with senior US officials, and about 200 US troops arrived in Bauchi in February to train Nigerian forces.

😡🌾 The Russian vessel ZAID is transporting more than 35,000 tons of Ukrainian wheat allegedly taken from occupied Crimea to a Turkish port, SeaKrime reports.
According to the report, the bulk carrier loaded cargo in Sevastopol and is heading to İskenderun in Türkiye. Before that, the vessel reportedly called at Russia’s Port Kavkaz to obtain falsified cargo documents.
SeaKrime also says that ZAID switched off its AIS transponder and used spoofing to conceal its route.
Since 2023, the vessel has reportedly been involved in transporting grain from temporarily occupied Crimea to Türkiye, Syria, Iran, and Egypt.
