🇵🇭🇺🇸 Philippines rejects special AI hub status

The Philippine government said a proposed US-backed Pax Silica artificial intelligence hub would remain under Philippine law and sovereignty, rejecting reports of any special legal or diplomatic arrangement. Manila was responding to coverage of the project in reports on the planned hub, which suggested it could operate with protections linked to the United States.

The pushback centers on whether a strategic technology facility in the Philippines could be placed under an exceptional regime for regulation, security, or jurisdiction. The issue matters because the project sits at the intersection of US-Philippine ties, AI industrial policy, and sovereignty sensitivities over foreign access to critical infrastructure and legal exemptions.

Manila’s position indicates any Pax Silica development would need to proceed within existing Philippine institutions and rules. That sets a clear limit on how far bilateral tech cooperation can be insulated from domestic oversight.
