Ukraine’s middle-strike drone campaign is turning into a battlefield isolation operation across Russia’s southern logistics network. Occupation authorities banned civilian truck traffic on the P-280/M-14 corridor linking Russia to occupied Crimea, effectively acknowledging that Ukrainian forces are controlling the land route by fire. Fuel shortages are already visible in Crimea, with limits at gas stations.

🇺🇸🇹🇼🇨🇳 Trump Signals Mixed Taiwan Line
US President Donald Trump said after his summit with Xi Jinping that he was not looking to have “somebody go independent”, while also offering to discuss a US$14 billion arms package with Taiwan’s leader. The proposed call and arms package would involve Taiwan and risk angering Beijing.
The combination of a warning against independence and an outreach tied to new arms sales has reopened debate over the consistency of Washington’s Taiwan policy. The issue is sensitive because US contacts with Taiwan’s top leadership and large-scale weapons transfers sit at the centre of US-China strategic friction.
Any move to proceed with the call or package would likely sharpen cross-strait tensions and add pressure on the US position toward Taiwan.

🇹🇿🇺🇸 US sanctions senior Tanzanian police officer over alleged torture of activists
The United States on 21 May sanctioned Tanzanian Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Faustine Jackson Mafwele, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s office saying there was credible information linking him to gross violations of human rights. Washington said Tanzanian police detained Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire in Dar es Salaam in May 2025, when they had travelled to observe opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s treason trial, and that the two were tortured and sexually assaulted before being left near their respective borders. Mafwele has been barred from entering the US.
The move adds to pressure on President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration amid scrutiny over Tanzania’s democratic backsliding, the disappearance of former ambassador Humphrey Polepole, and violence linked to the October 2025 elections. On 28 April, US ambassadorial nominee William Trachman told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that relations with Tanzania faced undeniable challenges.

Francis Fukuyama on the U.S. as a declining power:
American decline is a direct product of Trump's rise since 2016.
It is as if Trump had decided to do everything in his power to weaken the United States vis-à-vis China.
He has polarized an already polarized country, cut funding for basic scientific research, and attacked American universities which are the best in the world.
He and his colleagues have openly stated that their domestic opponents — the Democrats — are a far greater threat to the future of the United States than either China or Russia.
There is agreement among America's friends and rivals that the United States has become something of a rogue state that is contributing to global instability and disorder — as well as something of a laughingstock.
