Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung held a bilateral summit in Andong on May 19, marking their fourth in-person meeting as leaders. Talks centered on economic security, stable energy supply, and strengthening trilateral deterrence with the US. Both governments face shared pressure from US unilateralism, China's military and economic expansion, and North Korea's weapons development.

The bilateral relationship, badly strained through the late 2010s over wartime labor disputes and territorial issues, has stabilized since 2022. Experts now argue the partnership must move beyond symbolic gestures toward concrete cooperation — particularly on semiconductor export controls, where both Tokyo and Seoul fear Trump may reverse Biden-era restrictions limiting China's access to advanced chip technology. Japan's deteriorating relations with China, including Beijing's tightening of dual-use export restrictions, have increased Tokyo's strategic reliance on Seoul.

With Washington's reliability increasingly in question, Japan and South Korea are positioning bilateral coordination as a hedge against both US policy shifts and Chinese economic leverage.

Sweden has handed over to Ukraine a unique replica of the battle banner of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The artifact, handmade by Swedish craftsmen, was presented to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during his visit to Sweden.

“Today, we are bringing back from oblivion an important artifact of Ukrainian heritage. We agreed on this with our Swedish colleague Maria Stenergard last year in Uzhhorod, and I thank her for implementing these agreements.

We highly appreciate Sweden’s support.

We thank the Swedish Army Museum and Swedish craftsmen for creating an authentic example of this unique artifact,” Sybiha said.

After the Battle of Berestechko in 1651, the original banner was lost. Later, during the Great Northern War, it ended up in Sweden as a military trophy, where it has been preserved for centuries.
