🇨🇩🇺🇬 WHO declares Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern

The World Health Organisation on 17 May 2026 declared the Bundibugyo virus Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern. As of 16 May, eight laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases and 80 suspected deaths had been recorded in Ituri Province, DRC, across at least three health zones including Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu. Two additional laboratory-confirmed cases, including one death, were reported in Kampala, Uganda, on 15 and 16 May among individuals who had travelled from the DRC. The WHO noted there are currently no approved Bundibugyo virus-specific therapeutics or vaccines.

The WHO said the outbreak does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency but warned of significant uncertainties around the true number of infected persons and geographic spread, noting that neighbouring countries sharing land borders with the DRC are at high risk of further spread. Case fatality rates in the two previous Bundibugyo virus outbreaks, in Uganda in 2007 and DRC in 2012, ranged from approximately 30% to 50%.

Sweden has handed over to Ukraine a unique replica of the battle banner of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The artifact, handmade by Swedish craftsmen, was presented to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during his visit to Sweden.

“Today, we are bringing back from oblivion an important artifact of Ukrainian heritage. We agreed on this with our Swedish colleague Maria Stenergard last year in Uzhhorod, and I thank her for implementing these agreements.

We highly appreciate Sweden’s support.

We thank the Swedish Army Museum and Swedish craftsmen for creating an authentic example of this unique artifact,” Sybiha said.

After the Battle of Berestechko in 1651, the original banner was lost. Later, during the Great Northern War, it ended up in Sweden as a military trophy, where it has been preserved for centuries.
