Samsung Electronics and its main union resumed talks on May 20 in Seoul, with South Korea's labour minister mediating after negotiations over bonuses collapsed the previous day. Around 50,500 workers are set to walk off production lines for 18 days beginning May 21 — dwarfing a 2024 walkout that drew roughly 6,000. Management rejected an earlier mediation proposal from the National Labour Relations Commission.

The union is demanding removal of a bonus cap set at 50% of annual salaries and allocation of 15% of operating profit to bonuses. Samsung posted a ~750% year-on-year jump in Q1 operating profit and crossed a $1 trillion market cap for the first time in May, sharpening worker grievances over profit distribution amid an AI-driven semiconductor boom. Semiconductors account for approximately 35% of South Korea's exports.

A prolonged stoppage at the world's largest memory chipmaker carries direct risk to global semiconductor supply at a moment of elevated demand.
