🇸🇩 Over 19 Million Sudanese Face Acute Food Insecurity as Civil War Enters Fourth Year
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification reported on May 16 that 19.5 million people — over 40 percent of Sudan's population — are facing acute food insecurity. Of those, 135,000 are classified in IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe), more than 5 million in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency), and 14 million in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis). Fourteen areas in North Darfur, South Darfur, and South Kordofan are at risk of famine, and conditions are expected to worsen during the June–September lean season.
Only 20 percent of Sudan's 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan had been funded as of April 2026, with around 9 million people internally displaced and approximately 40 percent of health facilities non-operational. The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces broke out in April 2023.
