Kinshasa-based Rawbank already directs 32.4% of its loan portfolio toward the extractive sector, reflecting the depth of financial exposure to the mining industry in the country.

The DRC sits at the geographic crossroads of Central, Southern, and East Africa and operates a highly dollarised economy, making it a strategically attractive environment for regional financial institutions seeking to embed themselves in critical mineral value chains.

Malaysian police have opened a probe into claims that fugitive financier Jho Low secretly returned to Kuala Lumpur for negotiations related to the 1MDB scandal. An online news portal, citing unnamed sources, reported that Low attended the meetings under the protection of a Chinese delegation. No official confirmation of his presence has been issued.

Low has been a fugitive since 2018, wanted by Malaysian and US authorities over his alleged central role in the embezzlement of billions from the state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad. His reported return — if confirmed — would mark a significant development, given that Malaysia has been pursuing a negotiated settlement to recover remaining 1MDB assets. The involvement of a Chinese delegation adds a foreign-policy dimension to what has been framed as a domestic legal matter.
