🇿🇦 South Africa: Court orders resumption of Zuma arms deal corruption trial
A South African court on 14 May ordered the resumption of the long-delayed corruption trial of former president Jacob Zuma, 84. Judge Nkosinathi Chili of the Pietermaritzburg court rejected a fresh request for postponement, ruling that the trial must resume in the interests of justice. Zuma faces 16 charges of fraud, corruption and racketeering linked to the 1999 purchase of military equipment worth close to €2.8bn from five European arms companies.
Zuma is accused of pocketing more than R4 million — around $600,000 at the exchange rate of the time — notably from French defence group Thales, which is also being prosecuted for corruption and money laundering. Both Zuma and Thales have consistently denied the allegations since the trial began in May 2021.

There are two reasons why Europe should resume contacts with Russia. One of them is that Ukraine is in a strong position, and Russia is in a weak one, said the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb.
Stubb confirmed that he is among the European politicians who advocate resuming dialogue with Russia, as Europe’s interests are currently not being taken into account. At the same time, he emphasized that Europe must establish “red lines” in this dialogue that cannot be crossed.
“Firstly, there will be no return to the way things were before. Finland is a good example — we joined NATO because Russia attacked Ukraine, so relations will not return to their previous state.
The conditions, in my view, are quite classic. They relate to efforts to stop the war and to establish diplomatic relations in general. And there are two reasons why I believe the time is coming for Europe to do this.
The first is that Ukraine is now in a strong position, and Russia is in a weak one. One could say that Ukraine may actually win this war, so it would be in Russia’s interest to start this dialogue.
And the second is European interests. If you are not at the table, you risk being on the menu. I believe it is better to engage in some form of dialogue. Who will do it and under what conditions — it is still too early to say. But it is important,” Stubb said.
