Published in Naval and Merchant Ships, the paper argues the self-propelled vessels — which convert wave motion into thrust via submerged fin assemblies — could sustain long-term operations in distant waters without crews or refuelling.

The proposal comes as China faces sustained friction over island and reef claims in the South China Sea. The authors identify applications including routine patrol, monitoring of illegal activity, and far-sea search and rescue. The shift mirrors a broader trend — the US has already integrated wave-powered platforms like the Wave Glider into naval surveillance — as AI-enabled uncrewed systems emerge as low-cost alternatives to destroyers, patrol aircraft, and submarines.

If operationalised, persistent autonomous patrols would expand China's effective maritime presence without the crewing and logistical demands of conventional assets.
