🇨🇩 Ebola Outbreak Kills 80 in Eastern DR Congo's Ituri Province, Spreads to Uganda

Africa's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has declared an Ebola outbreak in DR Congo's eastern Ituri province, with approximately 246 cases and 80 deaths reported, mainly in the gold-mining towns of Mongwalu and Rwampara. Preliminary tests at the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale in Kinshasa detected the virus in 13 of 20 samples analysed. Uganda confirmed one imported case on Friday after a 59-year-old Congolese man admitted to a hospital in Kampala on Monday died in intensive care on Thursday.

Africa CDC executive director Dr Jean Kaseya cited significant population movement between affected areas and neighbouring countries as a key concern, with a regional coordination meeting convened involving DR Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, and international partners. This is DR Congo's 17th Ebola outbreak; the country's deadliest, between 2018 and 2020, killed nearly 2,300 people.
