Ukraine has begun producing its own nuclear fuel, Energoatom reported. The company is implementing agreements with Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB to localize the production of components for VVER-1000 fuel assemblies.

Atomenergomash, a separate division of Energoatom, has received the necessary materials to produce the first batch of liners for VVER-1000 fuel assemblies. The production cycle for this batch is expected to take four months.

The components manufactured in Ukraine will be used for nuclear power plant fuel. Acting Chairman of the Board Pavlo Kovtonyuk said the launch of domestic production is a strategic step toward energy independence.

Westinghouse has recognized Atomenergomash as a qualified supplier, noting that its quality management system meets the company’s standards.
