🇨🇳🇰🇷 Chinese Hacker Extradited Over $32M Crypto and Bank Theft

A 40-year-old Chinese national suspected of leading a hacking ring was extradited to South Korea from Bangkok on May 13, according to the South Korean Justice Ministry. He is accused of operating a criminal network out of Thailand that hacked budget mobile carrier websites between August 2023 and April 2025 to harvest personal data, then used it to drain bank and cryptocurrency accounts totalling over 38 billion won ($32M). Confirmed victims include a major conglomerate chairman, a venture firm head, and BTS member Jungkook.

Seoul formally requested extradition from Thai authorities in August 2025 after securing a provisional arrest the prior May — a treaty-based procedure used ahead of full extradition filings. The ministry deployed prosecutors to Bangkok in July 2025 to liaise directly with Thailand's Attorney-General office and police, while coordinating a joint Interpol operation through the National Police Agency. A second Chinese accomplice, arrested during that operation, was extradited separately in August.

The case marks a rare successful treaty-based extradition between South Korea and Thailand in a cybercrime context, tested across a two-year timeline.
