🇺🇬 Uganda's Museveni sworn in for record seventh consecutive term

Yoweri Museveni, 81, was inaugurated as Uganda's president on 12 May 2026 for a seventh consecutive term, following his declared victory in January elections with over 70% of the vote. The ceremony was held at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, declared a public holiday, with armoured tanks deployed across the capital ahead of the event. African leaders attending included Tanzania's Samia Suluhu Hassan, DRC's Félix Tshisekedi, South Sudan's Salva Kiir, and Somalia's Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Museveni, who first took power in 1986, said his new term would focus on job creation, wealth generation, and oil revenue-driven economic growth, with his current term set to run until 2031.

Main rival Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, rejected the results as marred by ballot-stuffing and fled the country, citing fears for his life. Amnesty International reported that at least 16 people were likely killed by security forces between 15 and 18 January following the disputed vote.

Beijing has actually found a diplomatic way to circumvent its own restrictions. After Rubio was appointed to office in January 2025, the Chinese authorities and state media began using a different character to write the first syllable of his surname.

Diplomats suggest that this allowed the new Secretary of State to be formally distanced from the sanctions list.

China imposed sanctions against Rubio when he was a US senator. The reason was his harsh criticism of Beijing over the human rights situation.

During the hearings on his appointment, Rubio called China an "unprecedented adversary" of the United States.

He was one of the main authors of the bill to impose sanctions over the alleged use of forced labor against Uyghurs, an accusation that Beijing denies.

However, since joining the Trump administration, Rubio has supported the president's course of stabilizing trade relations with China.
