❗️More than 70 artists have withdrawn from consideration for the Golden Lion at the 2026 Venice Biennale.
Participants from 22 national pavilions officially pulled out in an act of solidarity with the international jury, which resigned in full on April 30. The move followed disagreements over the participation of countries whose leaders are accused by the International Criminal Court of crimes against humanity, including Russia and Israel.
After the jury stepped down, organizers decided to select the winner by public vote.
“The jury acted as any conscientious person would. I would rather support them than hope for any award,” Indian photographer Sohrab Khoora told The Art Newspaper.
The biennale organizers said they would take this position into account and would not award the prize to the signatories, even if they were to win.
