🇸🇳 Senegal: Sonko moves to seize control of Pastef ahead of June congress
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko is positioning to take control of Senegal's ruling Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le travail, l'éthique et la fraternité party at its first-ever congress scheduled for 6 June, putting him on a direct collision course with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The two leaders have been at odds over the government's response to a $7 billion hidden debt crisis inherited from former president Macky Sall, with Sonko opposing IMF demands for debt restructuring and maintaining the backing of the party base. Electoral reforms passed last week cleared the way for Sonko to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Faye warned in a televised address last weekend that Pastef risked collapsing and that the party was bigger than one man, a thinly veiled rebuke of his prime minister. Both leaders have established separate formal factions within the party ahead of the congress.

Russia is gradually modernizing its Tupolev Tu-160M strategic bombers, according to satellite imagery.
The Russian Telegram channel Flight Bomber published footage of an upgraded aircraft with tail number 8-04 “Deinekin.” In total, six modernized Tu-160M aircraft and three newly built Tupolev Tu-160M2 have been confirmed.
According to AviVector, of 18 aircraft, only seven are regularly used for combat missions, while the rest remain in workshops at the Kazan Aircraft Production Association.
Satellite images from March 18 confirm the modernization process, but the pace remains slow, and full-scale new production is expected to begin only in early 2026.
