Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr performed jumping jacks on camera in April to counter viral claims he was paralysed, dying, or already dead. The government filed complaints against multiple Facebook accounts and warned Meta of legal action, calling the campaign an "escalating" threat to national security. Fact-checkers tracked hundreds of posts across Facebook, TikTok, and X — some accumulating tens of thousands of shares — using old or manipulated visuals.

The disinformation surge followed Marcos' January hospitalisation for diverticulitis and has circulated heavily among supporters of Vice-President Sara Duterte, his primary rival and 2028 presidential candidate. Her impeachment on May 11 has complicated her electoral prospects, giving the health narrative added political utility. The campaign also draws on the Marcos family's documented history of medical secrecy during his father's dictatorship.

The convergence of a contested impeachment, fabricated health content, and Meta's unresolved liability creates compounding pressure on Manila's political stability ahead of the 2028 cycle.

🇸🇳 Senegal: Sonko moves to seize control of Pastef ahead of June congress

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko is positioning to take control of Senegal's ruling Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le travail, l'éthique et la fraternité party at its first-ever congress scheduled for 6 June, putting him on a direct collision course with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The two leaders have been at odds over the government's response to a $7 billion hidden debt crisis inherited from former president Macky Sall, with Sonko opposing IMF demands for debt restructuring and maintaining the backing of the party base. Electoral reforms passed last week cleared the way for Sonko to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Faye warned in a televised address last weekend that Pastef risked collapsing and that the party was bigger than one man, a thinly veiled rebuke of his prime minister. Both leaders have established separate formal factions within the party ahead of the congress.
