🇿🇦 Ramaphosa vows to stay in office as Constitutional Court revives Phala Phala impeachment proceedings
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa declared on 11 May that he will not resign following a Constitutional Court ruling that revived impeachment proceedings tied to an alleged robbery at his Phala Phala game farm in 2020. Speaking in a late-night televised address, Ramaphosa announced he would apply to the High Court to review a report by an independent panel chaired by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo, which concluded he may have acted inconsistently with his office and created a potential conflict between his official responsibilities and private interests.
Ramaphosa dismissed the panel's findings as containing grave flaws and said the complaints against him are based on hearsay allegations, maintaining he has not stolen public money, committed any crime, or violated his oath of office.

The return of Ukrainian children must be an integral part of the peace process. The fate of these children can never be subject to any compromises.
Russia has already proposed including children in exchange lists, which is unacceptable, as their freedom is unconditional, said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during a meeting of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.
“The Russians are afraid of this issue and are trying to downplay it. They demand its removal from the agenda because they understand they are committing a crime and fear justice.
We have managed to return more than two thousand children, but not thanks to international mechanisms — rather in spite of them.
When it came to the actual return of children, individual countries — Qatar, the United States, the Holy See, and others, including those present here — provided assistance. Our special services and state institutions also played a key role.”
The minister called on the European Union to impose entry bans on Russian citizens involved in the deportation, indoctrination, and illegal adoption of abducted Ukrainian children:
“The international coalition must become an effective mechanism for their return.
To achieve this, a clear roadmap is needed, along with stronger support for search, return, and reintegration efforts, full implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution, new sanctions against those responsible for deportations, and enforcement of the ICC arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova.”
The EU announced the mobilization of €50 million to strengthen Ukraine’s child protection system. Lithuania allocated an additional €10 million to counter forced deportations, and Germany provided €1.4 million for social and psychological assistance.
The United Kingdom is allocating £1.2 million for the identification and return of Ukrainian children, while Canada announced a new support package that includes sanctions for violations of children’s rights and $3.4 million for the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
Poland also announced nearly €10 million in support for Ukrainian refugees.
Slovenia, Croatia, and Georgia are developing rehabilitation programs for returned children, including health recovery and summer camp initiatives.
As of May 2026, more than 20,570 cases of deportation and forcible transfer of Ukrainian children have been documented.
At the same time, more than 2,129 children have been returned to Ukraine.
According to available estimates, around 1.6 million Ukrainian children remain under Russian control in temporarily occupied territories or have been deported.

🇨🇳🇺🇸🇹🇼 Beijing Eyes Stronger Hand on Taiwan in Xi-Trump Talks
China enters this week's Xi-Trump summit with greater leverage on Taiwan than during Trump's first term, according to Wu Yongping, dean of the Institute for Taiwan Studies at Tsinghua University, who told SCMP the issue would "definitely" be raised in the bilateral meeting. Beijing would welcome any US statements opposing Taiwan independence, though Wu assessed the space for independence as already narrowing structurally.
The two leaders avoided the Taiwan issue at their South Korea meeting in October 2025. That silence has since broken — US Secretary of State Rubio confirmed it would be on the agenda, while Chinese FM Wang Yi called it the single biggest risk in China-US relations during a recent call with Rubio. Wu assessed that Trump is less Taiwan-focused than in his first term and that Beijing believes the issue can be managed within a stable bilateral framework.
No major shift in position is expected from either side, but the framing signals Beijing intends to set terms, not react to them.

🇺🇦 Zelensky: Russia itself chose to end the partial silence that had lasted for several days. Over 200 strike drones were launched over Ukraine that night.
Air bombs were dropped on the front again – over 80, more than 30 air strikes were recorded. Strike drones were downed in the Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv regions, in Kyiv and the region.
There is damage to energy facilities, apartment buildings, a kindergarten, and there was even a strike on an ordinary civilian locomotive on the railway...
It is known that there are injuries from these strikes. Unfortunately, there are also deaths. My condolences to the relatives and friends.
We said that we would act in a mirror image in response to all Russian steps. Russia must end this war, and it is she who must take a step towards a real, lasting ceasefire.
Until this happens, sanctions against Moscow are necessary and must continue to work and intensify. It is important that there is no letup and that partners do not stand aside, but continue to work together for security, justice, and a lasting peace.
