🇰🇷🇺🇸 South Korea Deploys Destroyer for U.S. Fleet Review

The 4,400-ton ROKS Munmu the Great departed Jeju Island on May 11 to join a major international fleet review in New York scheduled for July 3–8, alongside approximately 100 naval vessels from around 50 countries including Canada, Britain, Japan, and Spain. Prior to the review, the destroyer will participate in multinational field training off Norfolk, Virginia hosted by the U.S. Second Fleet, involving some 30 vessels from 18 nations.

The deployment spans roughly two months and combines multilateral naval exercises with bilateral outreach. Port calls in Mexico and Colombia will be used to promote South Korean naval platforms and weapons systems, while stops in Cartagena and San Diego will include veteran commemoration events tied to the 1950–53 Korean War.

The mission reflects South Korea's continued investment in multilateral naval presence across both the Atlantic and the Western Hemisphere.

🇹🇬 New Opposition Coalition Holds First Rally in Lomé Against Gnassingbé Constitutional Changes

Four Togolese opposition parties and civil society groups formed a coalition called the National Consultation Framework for Change in Togo (CNCC) and held their first meeting on Saturday, May 10, in the capital Lomé, drawing several hundred people. Speakers included Jean-Pierre Fabre, president of the National Alliance for Change (ANC), who raised the case of poet and activist Honoré Sitsopé Sokpor, jailed again on Monday after a brief release under judicial supervision. David Dosseh, spokesman for civil society group Citizens' Front Togo Standing (FCTD), told AFP the gathering marked the start of a new phase of mobilisation against the 2024 constitution.

The 2024 constitution abolished the direct election of the head of state by universal suffrage and replaced it with a parliamentary system, with the president of the council — a post currently held by Faure Gnassingbé, in power since 2005 — becoming the highest office. Protests against the constitutional changes last year left seven people dead, according to civil society groups.

🇬🇧 The UK has imposed sanctions on 85 individuals and organisations involved in the forced deportation of children to Russia

29 individuals and organisations are involved in the direct deportation and militarisation of Ukrainian children.

Another 56 positions on the list are presented as being involved in the Kremlin's information war.

Sanctions have also been imposed on those involved in the recent attempt by the Russian Federation to interfere in the upcoming elections in Armenia.

The UK government has also allocated an additional £1.2m (about $1.5m) to find and return the deported children.
