🇪🇹 Ethiopia's Tigray Crisis Deepens as TPLF Declares Pretoria Agreement Dead and Elects Rival President

The Tigray People's Liberation Front declared the Pretoria Agreement dead on 19 April, citing federal non-compliance, after opposing the extension of General Tadesse Werede's term as president of the interim administration for a further year. The TPLF's Central Committee rejected the legitimacy of the Mekelle interim administration and on 5 May convened its own Council to elect Debretsion Gebremichael as regional president, placing Tigray on a direct collision course with Addis Ababa.

The moves contravene the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, which required the undoing of administrative and political arrangements tied to the 2020 regional elections and the pre-war regional council.
