🇯🇵🇳🇿 Japan's Mogami Frigate Leads New Zealand Navy Bid

Japan's Mogami-class destroyer is emerging as the frontrunner to replace New Zealand's two ageing ANZAC-class frigates, as Wellington narrows its selection to either the Mogami or Britain's Type 31 frigate under its 2025 Defence Capability Plan. The ANZAC frigates, launched in the early 1990s, are due for replacement with more capable modern platforms. The Type 31 is set to enter service in 2027 and has already been sold to Poland and Indonesia.

The procurement decision carries strategic weight beyond platform capability. A Mogami selection would mark another significant export win for Japan's defence industry, coming weeks after Tokyo lifted its long-held ban on weapons exports. The Type 31 holds a potential edge in long-term adaptability due to its larger hull and modular design, enabling easier sensor and weapons upgrades. Australia's existing procurement choices are reported to be influencing Wellington's calculus.

🇨🇩 ADF Kills at Least 36 in Two Days of Attacks in Northeastern DR Congo

Fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed at least 36 people in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo over two days, local and security sources said on May 8. At least 15 people, including one child and three women, were killed in the town of Biakato in Ituri province. A further 21 people, most of them farmers, died in attacks on four villages on the border between Ituri and North Kivu provinces.

On May 5, Amnesty International accused the ADF of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Islamic State-linked armed group has been based in eastern Congo since the late 1990s, and Uganda has deployed troops alongside the Congolese military to fight the group since 2021.
