🇲🇱 Mali junta leader Goïta names himself defence minister after predecessor killed in suicide bombing

Mali's military leader Gen Assimi Goïta has appointed himself defence minister following the killing of his predecessor Sadio Camara, who died in an apparent suicide truck bombing on his residence near the capital Bamako. A decree read on state television on Monday confirmed the appointment, with army chief of staff Gen Oumar Diarra named as minister delegate. The move came more than a week after an alliance of the separatist Azawad Liberation Front and the al-Qaeda-linked JNIM launched coordinated nationwide attacks on 25 April, subsequently imposing a partial blockade on Bamako and other cities.

Malian authorities have arrested a group of soldiers allegedly complicit in planning and executing the attacks, according to a Bamako military court prosecutor. Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso — all members of the Alliance of Sahel States — have since launched joint air strikes against the insurgents.
