🇨🇩 Amnesty International Accuses ADF of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity in Eastern DRC

Amnesty International on May 5 accused the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an IS-linked armed group operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The report, based on testimonies from 71 people collected between October and February, details kidnappings, forced labour, child soldier recruitment, forced marriage, forced pregnancy, and sexual violence. Seven former hostages abducted last year told Amnesty their families paid ransoms ranging from $100 to $10,000 to secure their release. Amnesty secretary-general Agnes Callamard stated the abuses also amount to crimes against humanity as part of a widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population.

The ADF, originally founded by former Ugandan rebels, has operated across North Kivu and Ituri provinces for three decades. The Ugandan army has been deployed alongside Congolese forces in those provinces since 2021 to combat the group, but joint operations have failed to end the violence.

Financing for the purchase of weapons is carried out through the mechanism of PURL program.

❗️Zelensky says Russia broke the ceasefire, recording 1,820 violations by 10:00, including shelling, assault attempts, airstrikes and drone attacks. He said Russian forces launched nearly 30 assaults on key front sections from the start of the day, more than 20 airstrikes using over 70 guided bombs overnight and this morning, plus drone and missile strikes. Ukraine will decide next steps after evening military and intelligence reports.
