🇰🇵 North Korea Nears Completion of New Enrichment Facility

Satellite imagery analyzed by Beyond Parallel, a project of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, indicates that a new building at North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear complex is externally complete and nearing operational readiness. Construction began in mid-December 2024, with most exterior work finished by early June 2025.

IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi stated in March that the building's size and infrastructure — including power supply and cooling capabilities — are comparable to those of the Kangson enrichment facility. Imagery from April 2 shows supporting structures including a backup power building, an administrative facility, and a vehicle storage area. Frequent vehicle and personnel sightings over the past four months suggest work has shifted to interior outfitting.

Neither the Yongbyon structure nor the Kangson facility has been declared to the IAEA. A South Korean presidential office official, speaking anonymously, said Seoul and Washington are closely monitoring North Korea's nuclear facilities but declined to provide further details.
