Crude oil supplies from Russia’s largest Black Sea port in Novorossiysk remain limited, with the two largest berths still not operational after Ukrainian drone attacks last week, Bloomberg reports.
Berths 1 and 1A, designed to handle Suezmax and Aframax tankers, remain idle at Transneft’s Sheskharis terminal, according to EU Copernicus satellite imagery and sources familiar with shipping data.
Currently, oil is being loaded only through Berth 2, which can handle smaller Aframax tankers, sources said. Pipeline operator Transneft did not respond to a request for comment.
Novorossiysk is Russia’s largest Black Sea port with developed infrastructure for crude exports. In the first quarter of this year, it shipped an average of nearly 540,000 barrels per day, according to Bloomberg.
Due to its importance for Russia’s oil industry, the port has repeatedly been targeted by Ukrainian strikes. Kyiv is seeking to limit the Kremlin’s additional revenues amid rising global oil prices linked to the war with Iran.
The latest drone attack a week ago halted shipments from Novorossiysk for several days. Ukraine reported damage to equipment at at least five berths at the Sheskharis terminal and the pipeline network connected to storage facilities.
Shipments resumed late last week when an Aframax tanker docked at Berth 2, according to vessel tracking data.
Berth 2 can handle tankers with a maximum load of 105,500 tons, limiting it to Aframax-class vessels. In contrast, Berths 1 and 1A can accommodate vessels up to 242,000 and 170,000 deadweight tons respectively, including larger Suezmax tankers.
Meanwhile, loading at Berths 6 and 7, used for petroleum product exports, continues.
According to Reuters, Russia’s oil revenues could double to $9 billion in April due to rising prices amid the Iran war. However, much will depend on the duration of the conflict and the intensity of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure.
