🇨🇳🇮🇳 China VP visits Tibet megadam construction site

Chinese Vice-Premier Zhang Guoqing visited the Yarlung Tsangpo construction site over the weekend, calling the project a major landmark of the new era. Zhang instructed that quality and safety must take precedence over construction speed, with rigorous controls applied at every stage from engineering design to material supply.

The dam, overseen by state-owned China Yajiang Group, carries a total estimated investment of 1.2 trillion yuan (US$175 billion) and will become the world's largest hydropower facility upon completion. Zhang also visited local firefighting and rescue units given the high-altitude and seismically active terrain.

India has repeatedly expressed concerns that the project could affect downstream water flows along the Brahmaputra river, which supports millions of people in India and Bangladesh. In response, India approved a US$3.1 billion hydropower project in Arunachal Pradesh last week and is advancing additional dam development along the same river system.
