Ukraine’s General Staff says Russia keeps breaking the Easter truce, with 55 attacks recorded by 16:00 on April 12. It’s the second straight day they ignore the ceasefire.

🌍 Africa's Growth Reaches 4.2% in 2025 But Remains Below Poverty-Reduction Threshold, AfDB Warns

Africa's economy grew at 4.2% in 2025, surpassing the global average of 3.1%, with 32 of 54 countries recording stronger growth than the previous year and 22 growing above 5%, according to the African Development Bank's latest Macroeconomic Performance and Outlook report. Growth is forecast to reach 4.3% in 2026 and 4.5% in 2027. However, AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah cautioned that growth remains below the 7% threshold needed to drive structural transformation and meaningfully reduce poverty.

The report flagged mounting debt vulnerabilities, with 25 African countries spending more on debt repayments than on public health, and warned that rising energy, food, and fertiliser prices linked to the war in Iran are adding pressure, particularly on the continent's poorest nations. Foreign direct investment rebounded sharply in 2024, rising more than 70% to reach $97 billion.

⬇️ The Russian budget exceeded the annual deficit norm in 2 months

As noted by the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Russian federal budget currently records a deficit of $69.9 billion, which is almost twice the previous estimate of the Ministry of Finance of $43.3 billion.

At the same time, the Russian authorities set the annual target at $50.5 billion. This, the intelligence service is sure, indicates a complete loss of control over the fiscal trajectory.

The Treasury recorded revenues at $31.36 billion versus $59.79 billion in the Ministry of Finance’s reporting — an almost double difference that goes beyond any technical errors. The expenditures are practically the same: $101.47 billion versus $103.10 billion, respectively.

The main factor in the failure is the collapse of oil and gas revenues, which in the first quarter of 2026 decreased to $18.1 billion, dropping by 45.5% year-on-year. This is the worst result since 2022.

🇨🇳 China Develops 2D Chip With 1,000x Growth Speed

A team of Chinese scientists led by researchers from the National University of Defence Technology and the Institute of Metal Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a wafer-scale growth method for 2D semiconductors. Their findings were published on March 26 in National Science Review.

The team modified the conventional chemical vapour deposition process by using a liquid gold/tungsten bilayer as the growth substrate, enabling doping-tunable growth of monolayer tungsten silicon nitride films. The new method raises the growth rate from as low as 1 micrometre over five hours to 20 micrometres per minute, with a final film size of 3.6cm by 1.8cm.

The material addresses a critical gap in 2D semiconductor development: the scarcity of stable, high-performance p-type materials required for sub-5-nanometre node transistors. Beyond integrated circuits, the material has potential applications in light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, lasers, and bio-interfacing electronic devices.
